When it comes to job hunting, one of the biggest challenges is getting noticed by recruiters. With so many applicants applying for the same position (especially in this environment of layoffs), it can be difficult to stand out from the crowd. However, there are some steps you can take to improve your chances of getting an interview with a recruiter. Here are some tips to help you increase your visibility and appeal to potential recruiters and hiring managers.

Tailor your resume and LinkedIn profile

One of the most important things you can do to improve your chances of getting an interview is to tailor your resume and LinkedIn profile to the specific job you’re applying for. This means highlighting the skills, experience, and qualifications that are most relevant to the position. Be sure to use keywords from the job description in your resume and LinkedIn profile to help you get noticed by recruiters who are using applicant tracking systems or LinkedIn Recruiter to source and screen profiles.

If you are applying to multiple types of roles, then we'd strongly recommend you create multiple resumes to be tailored towards each role, so your profile can come across as relevant as possible.

Build your online presence

In today’s digital age, it’s important to have a strong online presence. This means creating profiles on social media sites like LinkedIn and Twitter, and keeping them up to date with your latest accomplishments and projects. You can also create a personal website or blog to showcase your work and demonstrate your expertise in your field. For engineers specifically, this could be a web application you've built or even your personal GitHub. For designers, this could be your design portfolio highlighting your past work and projects.

Be proactive

Don’t wait for recruiters to come to you – be proactive and reach out to them. This could mean sending a personalized email or LinkedIn message to introduce yourself and express your interest in a particular job or company. Try to identify the hiring manager or recruiter for the role on LinkedIn and send them a message including: 1-paragraph intro of your background, a link to the specific role you're interested in, and your resume.

The hiring manager or recruiter is sometimes shown on the LinkedIn job post.

If you have trouble identifying them, your next best step would be reaching out to a recruiter or another employee at the company to ask to be introduced to the hiring manager. If you happen to be connected to any employees at the company already, leverage your network and send them a message.

You can view your connections to the company by viewing the company's LinkedIn page.

Network

Networking is another important factor in getting noticed by recruiters. Attend industry events, connect with people on LinkedIn, and join professional organizations to expand your network. This will help you learn about job opportunities and get introductions to recruiters who are looking for candidates like you. You can also ask for referrals from your network, or attend career fairs and job events to meet recruiters in person.

Be targeted in your approach

Make a list of what types of roles sound interesting to you, and use this as your search criteria for job searches. Always try to put yourself in the recruiter or hiring manager's shoes and try to market yourself based on what they're looking for in their ideal candidate profile using the strategies described above. Being intentional and targeted will not only drastically improve your response rate, but it will also save you mental exhaustion of sending out hundreds of applications and waiting to hear back indefinitely.

Prepare for interviews

Finally, once you do get an interview, make sure you’re fully prepared. Research the company and the role you’re interviewing for, and practice answering common interview questions. The most common questions in the interview process are "Can you describe your background?" and "Why are you interested in this role?", so be prepared to give a background of yourself and why you're specifically a great fit for the position.

Be sure to dress professionally, arrive on time, and follow up with a thank-you note after the interview. We'd strongly recommend this for Zoom interviews as well, since it's important to showcase your commitment and dedication to the role and hiring process.

Conclusion

Getting noticed by recruiters takes effort and persistence, but by tailoring your resume and LinkedIn profile, being proactive, networking, building your online presence, be targeted in your approach, and preparing for interviews, you can improve your chances of landing that dream job. Remember to be patient and keep trying – eventually, your hard work will pay off.
